What happens if you have acid reflux/heartburn?

I’m only 15 and I have severe heartburn and acid reflux.
I’ve taken prescription medication medication from my doctor which greatly decreased the pain/feeling of it, but sometimes it still happens (especially now since it’s Christmas… eating all sorts of rich foods)
Should the medication have taken away the heartburn altogether?
And also, are there any serious side effects of heartburn?
