Can you have acid reflux without knowing it?

I’m a singer and i have gerd. This is not good because reflux can eventually damage the esophogus. I know that reflux means chest pain in the middle of chest and acid rolling up in throat. Well i always have chest pains right over my heart, never in the middle. Is this heartburn? And is it possible for acid to travel all the way to my vocal chords without realizing it?
