Acid Reflux?

I went to my dentist back in August and he told me I had damage to my teeth due to acid reflux (I have to get about 15 crowns put in. Joy.). I knew I had frequent heartburn, but it wasn’t very painful so I always ignored it. I started taking Prilosec OTC, but it doesn’t always work, even though I take it every morning.

My dentist recommended seeing an internist just to be sure. Can I go to a GP or do I have to actually go to a specialist? Would a doctor just write me a prescription or is there some sort of test/exam I’d have to have done first? If so, what is the procedure?

I have insurance, but I am away at college (probably what gave me the acid reflux - all that stress) so going to the clinic on campus would be more convenient. We have a hospital, too, but I’d prefer to avoid going there (too big and expensive).
